Telecast Fiber Systems Honored with 2026 Technology & Engineering Emmy® Award

Academy recognizes the SMPTE hybrid cable format converter and power injector

WORCESTER, MA, UNITED STATES, September 9, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has recognized Telecast Fiber Systems with a Technology & Engineering Emmy® Award for 2026 for the SMPTE Hybrid Cable Format Converter and Power Injector. The award is shared with Bluebell Opticom Ltd and MultiDyne Electronics Inc.

Telecast's contribution was the SMPTE Hybrid Elimination Device, which it branded the SHED. It allows high-definition camera chains to transmit over standard single mode fiber already installed in a venue, carrying video, audio, and data to the camera and reinserting camera power at the far end.

Telecast designed and built the first generation of SHED systems for CBS Sports in 2003, for the network's unification of its analog and HDTV golf productions at Augusta National.

“What made this challenge interesting was there was no road map, no standard ‘handshake’ or safety interlock for the high voltage,” said Eugene Baker, co-founder of Telecast Fiber Systems. “Each manufacturer was different and not always willing to share details, so each camera interface needed to
be reverse engineered.”

“We are grateful to the Academy, and to the CBS Sports management who gave the SHED its first outing on shows that could not fail,” said Richard Cerny, co-founder of Telecast Fiber Systems. “This one belongs to our engineering team and to everyone who worked at Telecast.”

Recipients will be honored at a joint ceremony with the Television Academy on Wednesday, October 14 at the Television Academy's Saban Media Center in North Hollywood, California.

Eugene Baker and Richard Cerny were veterans of the fiber optics and broadcast industries when they formed Telecast Fiber Systems in 1991. The company developed fiber and electro-optical systems for mobile television production, and its products carried broadcasters through the industry's transitions to
